The Ministry of Education and Research is introducing extra security measures from Thursday because of critical software vulnerabilities, to protect the Moodle learning environment and the data processed in it. The platform will be taken offline for a time so it can be shielded from possible cyberattacks.
The ministry said the temporary closure is a preventive step meant to avoid a possible data leak, damage to the learning environment and longer interruptions that could follow. It said it understands the shutdown may inconvenience users and is working with technical partners to apply the needed security updates as quickly as possible.
Normal use will resume after the updates are installed and their performance has been checked. A separate notice will announce when Moodle reopens.
On Wednesday the National Archives said several of its web environments had been temporarily closed as a precaution or limited to Estonian IP addresses. The archives said critical vulnerabilities had been found in the widely used web software PHP, that security patches are being installed, and that services will be restored as soon as possible.
